
Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo DS handheld soared past Sony Corp.’s PSP in Japan after a struggle between the two devices in the latest Japan retail tally.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the DS sold 116,694 units between Nov. 19 and Nov. 25 to rank as the No. 1 video game hardware seller. By comparison, the PSP sold 75,027 units in the same period for a No. 2 rank.
One week prior the DS sold 76,069 units compared to the PSP’s 65,609 units sold.
Overall, the DS ranked four titles in the top 10 software sales, including Square Enix Co.’s Dragon Quest IV at 597,301 units sold for the week.
Nintendo in Oct. raised profit forecast estimates on strong demand for the Wii and Nintendo DS handheld. It expects to sell 17.5 million Wii units this business year.
Sony in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.
