A Sony Corp. spokesperson for the company’s U.S. game division on Thurs. debunked Microsoft Corp.’s Thanksgiving sales estimates that gave a 2-to-1 edge for the Xbox 360 over the Playstation 3.
Microsoft on Thurs. claimed that the Xbox 360 outsold Sony’s PS3 2-to-1 according to internal company data from Thanksgiving week sales.
Sony spokesperson Kimberly Otzman disputed the sales estimate in an e-mail statement to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
“It’s policy not to disclose our unit sales numbers until NPD numbers are officially released which will be December 13th. However, I can assure you that Microsoft’s estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week.”
Sony did not release a PS3 Thanksgiving sales estimate, but last week said that sales increased 245 percent between Nov. 18 and Nov. 24, which includes Black Friday sales.
Sony in Nov. released a $399 40GB PS3 SKU to spur holiday sales. The SKU includes a Blu-ray disc drive, built-in Wi-Fi, a wireless controller, and copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc.
Sony in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.
Microsoft in Oct. held a spiked sales increase for the Xbox 360 on the launch of the anticipated title Halo 3. Robust sales helped record a Q1 profit for Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division, which includes Xbox business.
