Microsoft Corp. this week said that it will begin to offer older Xbox titles for download on the Xbox 360 starting in Dec.
On Dec. 4, a new system update will allow Xbox Live members to download Xbox Originals, full Xbox game titles, to their hard drive.
Initial titles include Halo, Psychonauts, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fable. Titles will carry a retail price of 1,200 Microsoft Points per game.
In addition, Microsoft said the Xbox Live online network has reached eight million members worldwide. The service began on Nov. 15, 2002.
To celebrate the anniversary, Microsoft is offering a free download of any Xbox Live Arcade title from Nov. 15 to Nov. 16. Also, any active member who joined in 2002 will receive 500 Microsoft Points at no cost.
“In just five short years Xbox LIVE has revolutionized the way friends and family have fun in the living room,” said John Schappert, corporate vice president of LIVE, software and services at Microsoft.
“On its fifth birthday, Xbox LIVE truly is the place for hanging out with friends and enjoying downloadable TV shows, movies, videos, game add-ons and now downloadable Xbox games on demand.”
Microsoft in Oct. recorded a Q1 profit in the Entertainment and Devices division, which includes the Xbox business.
Microsoft has shipped 13.4 million Xbox 360 units to date.
