
The lead of Nintendo Co.’s Wii slimmed over Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in the latest retail sales data for the region.
The Wii outsold PS3 2-to-1 in Japan in Oct. compared to a lead of 6-to-1 in June.
The Wii sold 110,415 units compared to the PS3 at 47,183 units in the same period according to game magazine publisher Enterbrain.
Nintendo has held a lead in Wii sales on mass appeal of motion-sensitive software. Top titles include Wii Play and Mario Party 8.
Sony in Oct. price cut the PS3 by 10 percent in Japan to spur sales. In addition, it will begin to sell new 40GB model in the region on Nov. 11.
Sony this week said that losses caused by the PS3 game console may near $1 billion, an increase from a prior estimate of $876 million.
The company last week recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.
