Price cut spurs Xbox 360 sales at Japan retailer

Microsoft Corp.’s new Xbox 360 bundle ranked in the top 10 at Amazon Japan on Thurs. after the company price cut the hardware in the region.

The bundle, which retails for 34,800 yen, includes an HDMI-equipped Xbox 360 Premium SKU, wireless controller, and a copy of Forza Motorsport 2 and Viva Pinata. It ranked at No. 8 on Thurs. at the Amazon Japan game division.

Microsoft last month announced a 13 percent price cut for Xbox 360, which has seen slow sales slow sales in Japan next to popular handhelds and Nintendo Co.’s Wii.

In addition, Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 has held better sales than the 360 in weekly retail tallies.

In the first half of 2007, Microsoft sold 122,565 Xbox 360 units in Japan, compared to 503,554 PS3 units and 1.78 million Wii units, according to magazine publisher Enterbrain.

In contrast, Microsoft in Oct. recorded a Q1 profit in the Entertainment and Devices division due to higher-than-expected Xbox 360 sales and strong sales for the action title Halo 3.

The Xbox 360 has shipped 13.4 million units worldwide to date.
