Amazon holds hefty Wii restock

Amazon.com on Wed. held a hefty restock of Nintendo Co.’s Wii home video game system that made the in-demand hardware available for several hours at the online store.

Amazon advertised “Wii in stock now!” on the front page of the Computer & Video Games division on Wed. morning to spur hardware sales to the No. 1 rank.

The sales period last until around noon Wed. before stock was depleted.

On the same day, Super Mario Galaxy for Wii reached a peak of No. 1 in the game division. It later fell several positions below Wii peripheral sales.

In Nov., Nintendo will introduce the new $20 Wii Zapper gun peripheral to U.S. retail. Compatible titles include Sega’s Ghost Squad and Capcom Co.’s Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

Nintendo last week raised profit forecast estimates on strong demand for the Wii and Nintendo DS handheld. It expects to sell 17.5 million Wii units this business year.

Nintendo has shipped 13.2 million Wii units to date worldwide.
