Week recap: PS3 sold out; Xbox 360 profit; Wii E for All

Sony Corp. this week recorded a loss in the company’s game division on lower-than-expected Playstation 3 sales. Strong sales in its electronics division helped to offset the loss.

Amazon.com this week sold out in advance of the new 40GB PS3 SKU. Later in the week, the retailer began to offer more of the $399 product.

Sony this week released the Playstation Eye and EyeCreate video editor software for the PS3. The Playstation Eye is included in the new card battle title The Eye of Judgment.

PS3 title Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction ranked in the top 15 at Amazon this week. The action title was released on Tues. to retail stores.

Sony this week began offering new game demos, videos at the Playstation Store. New downloads include EyeCreate, Spyro the Dragon, and the Bionic Commando Video.

Sony this week announced that the Playstation 2 has reached 120 million units sold worldwide. Additionally, the company will retail a new Ceramic White PS2 this holiday.

Best Buy this week began offering the 40GB PS3 SKU to online customers. The new product includes a Blu-ray disc drive, built-in Wi-Fi, and copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc.

Microsoft Corp. this week posted a Q1 profit in its game division on strong Xbox 360 and Halo 3 sales The company has sold 13.4 million Xbox 360 units worldwide to date.

Microsoft this week blasted the Xbox 360 Arcade SKU to U.S. retail. The new bundle includes five Xbox Live Arcade titles, a 256MB Memory Card, and wireless controller for $279.

EA’s NFL Tour is faster on the Xbox 360 than the PS3. In a recent build displayed at the E for All Expo, the Xbox 360 version held a faster frame rate.

Xbox 360 sales fell this week in Japan. However, the hardware managed to chart one title in the top 10 game sales.

Microsoft this week fired new Blue Dragon content to the Xbox 360. The content includes six new offerings that offer new gameplay actions to the battle party.

Nintendo Co. this week increased its quarterly profit forecast on strong Wii and Nintendo DS sales. The company now expects to ship 17.5 million Wii units this business year.

The Wii sales lead over the PS3 narrowed in the latest Japan retail charts. The hardware ranked as the third most popular video game hardware offering in the region.

The Nintendo DS and Sony’s PSP are in a close bout in the latest Japan retail tally. The handhelds ranked as the No. 1 and No. 2 best-selling video game offerings for the week.

Sega this week announced that it will release Samba de Amigo to Wii. The new version will include motion-sensitive gameplay that utilizes Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

Eidos Interactive this week announced that Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary for Wii will be released in Nov. The new version will include more than three hours of exclusive content.
