Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 decreased in the latest Japan retail data. The PS3 ranked as the No. 5 best-selling hardware in the sales period.

Sony’s PSP destroyed the competition in the latest Japan hardware retail results. The handheld was the No. 1-selling hardware in the third week of Sept. on strong game sales.

Sony this week began offering new demos and downloads at the Playstation Store. New offerings include an NBA 08 demo and a new vehicle for MotorStorm.

Sony this week said that the title Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction will incur a minor delay. A demo of the latest entry is said to be available in Oct.

Sony this week announced the PS3 has crossed the Petaflop barrier to computations for the Folding@home project. The distributed network program began on Mar. 22.

EA this week announced Deep Space for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The new survival horror IP will be set aboard a deep space mining ship.

Sales for the Xbox 360 incurred a minor sales gain in the latest Japan retail data. The Xbox successor still ranked below most other video game hardware offerings.

Microsoft this week said that Halo 3 generated $170 million in the first 24 hours at U.S. retail. The game was released on Sept. 25.

Additionally, Halo 3 logged more than 1.3 million players in the first 24 hours of release. The Xbox Live network this month reached seven million members worldwide.

Various reports this week claimed that the Halo 3 Legendary Edition held scratched discs due to a disc holder malfunction.

Microsoft later confirmed the issue and offered to replace damaged discs through the Xbox Disc Replacement Program.

Pre-order and launch sales for Halo 3 this week drove Xbox 360 sales past Nintendo Co.’s Wii and Sony’s PS3 at Amazon.com.

Additionally, the Xbox 360 Elite shot into the top 10 this week on Halo 3 momentum.

Halo 3 sales this week fell out of the top 20 at Amazon Japan. The title was released in the region on Sept. 27.

Microsoft this week announced a price cut for select Xbox Live titles for a limited time. Discounted titles include Bankshot Billiards and Frogger.

Wii regained a 2-to-1 sales lead over the PS3 in the latest Japan retail tally. Additionally, Wii ranked three titles in the top 10 game sales for the week.

A restock for Wii invaded Halo 3 and Xbox 360 sales territory this week at Amazon. New Wii sales ranked ahead of the Xbox 360 and replaced a Halo 3 SKU in the top three.

Sales for Wii increased in the latest retail data from Ebay. The Wii held the No. 1 rank as the Most Popular video game hardware at the auction website.

Scaleform Corp. this week announced that Scaleform GFx has been released as a third party tools solution for Wii. The program allows developers to deliver a new user interface to deliver high-quality content to Wii.

Konami this week released Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party to the Wii. The latest entry utilizes new motion-sensitive controls and traditional mat-based gameplay.

Nintendo this week released a new wave of Wii Virtual Console titles. New offerings include Kirby’s Avalanche and Streets of Rage 3.
