Sales for Sony Corp.’s PSP handheld model destroyed the competition on strong game sales in the latest hardware sales data from Japan.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PSP sold 277,794 units between Sept. 17 and Sept. 23. By comparison, Nintendo Co.’s DS Lite sold 70,523 units, the Wii 24,992 units and the PS3 10,732 units in the same period.
The new Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core helped drive PSP sales to sell 108,519 copies in its debut week. Sales for the title, which included a new PSP bundle SKU, easily ranked as the No. 1-selling game for the week.
Additionally, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops held brisk sales at 93,354 units sold to debut at No. 2.
Sony debuted its latest PSP model on Sept. 20 in Japan. The slimmer, lighter PSP features an AV out to play on TV sets. It was released in the U.S. on Sept. 6.
Despite a lower No. 2 hardware rank, the DS ranked three titles in the top five game sales for the week.
The PSP typically yields sales below that of Nintendo’s DS handheld in week-to-week tallies in Japan due to the availability of mass market titles that appeal to females and the elderly. Top-selling titles include New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age 2.
The DS has sold more than 40 million units compared to the PSP at more than 25 million units worldwide to date.
