Retailer: PS3 80GB release set for Aug. 12

Sony Corp. will release its new 80GB Playstation 3 SKU on Aug. 12, according to a product listing of the item on Amazon.com.

The company this month announced that it would release an 80GB model with a copy of the online racing title MotorStorm for $599.

Amazon is not offering pre-orders for the item as of Tues. morning, however it does offer an e-mail alert service for notification when the item is available for purchase.

Sony this month price cut the 60GB PS3 SKU to $499 from $599.

Both the 80GB and 60GB models include a Blu-ray disc player, built-in Wi-Fi and a Sixaxis wireless controller.

Sony last week posted a first-quarter profit despite mounting losses in its game division. The PS3 has sold 4.3 million units worldwide to date.

Advanced circulars revealed this week that Microsoft will price cut the Xbox 360 by $50 in Aug. The company has neither confirmed nor denied the impending discount.
