Data research firm Hitwise this month said that Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 has surpassed Nintendo Co.’s Wii home video game system as the most searched for console online.
In July, the Xbox 360 overtook Wii as the most searched gaming console for the first time since Nov. 2006. Other high-volume Xbox 360 related search terms included “Xbox 360 Elite”, “Xbox 360 Games” and “Xbox 360 Cheats”.
Hitwise noted that “Xbox 360 problems” and “Xbox 360 repair” ranked at No. 13 and No. 15 on the list.
Additionally, the term “Xbox 360 price drop” ranked above searches for “Playstation 3 price drop” and “PS3 price drop”.
Hitwise predicts that the rise in Xbox 360 search terms could be a combination of inquiry into new game releases, price drop rumors, and malfunction issues.
Microsoft has sold 5.6 million Xbox 360 units to date in the U.S. It ranked as the No. 3 best-selling console in the U.S. for the month of June.
