Japan publisher Enterbrain on Mon. reported that Nintendo Co.’s Wii home video game system outsold Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in Japan by 6-to-1 in the month of June.
In the latest retail data, the Wii sold 270,974 units by June 24, compared to the PS3’s 41,628 units.
Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 sold 17,616 in the same period.
A low-cost, mass market strategy has helped Nintendo’s Wii appeal to consumers of all ages. Top titles in Japan include the five-game sports collection Wii Sports and the casual mini-game collection Wii Play.
Sony’s PS3, which debuted to massive crowds last fall, has lagged in retail sales due to its $500 entry level price tag and average game selection.
In late June, Nintendo overtook Sony in market capitalization when its stock rose to 46,350 yen ($374.35 U.S.).
Additionally, Wii typically ranks more game titles in the top 50 software sales. Overall, Wii ranked seven titles in the top 50 sales between June 18 and June 24.
Nintendo expects to ship 14 million Wii units this business year.
