Week recap: PS3 green; Xbox 360 sales fall; Wii plunge

Amazon.com this week discounted Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 Sixaxis wireless controller to $39. The savings represents a discount of 20 percent off the MSRP.

Sales for the PS3 stayed green in Japan this week in the latest hardware tally. In addition, the PS3 held three software titles in the top 50 game sales for the week.

Sony Style stores in the U.S. have begun offering a free $50 gift card with purchase of a PS3 and two $59 games. The offer is the latest promotion to spur hardware sales.

Fry’s Electronics this week discounted four PS3 titles to $32 in its latest Fri. circular. Titles include Ridge Racer 7 and NBA 2K7.

Sony this week released new offerings to the Playstation Store, including Super Stardust HD, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, and a new Grand Theft Auto IV trailer. Additionally, new movie trailers are available to download.

Golf title Everybody’s Golf 5 reached the top 25 sales at Amazon Japan this week. It was the top-ranking PS3 title on the charts in mid-week.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 fell 56 percent this week in the latest Japan retail data. However, the console ranked two titles in the top 50 games sales in the same period.

Microsoft this week announced that the new RPG Blue Dragon will be released to the U.S. in Aug. The premier title helped boost hardware sales in Japan when it was released in Dec.

Microsoft this week announced that a brand new trailer for Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV is available for download on Xbox Live. In addition, fans can download an exclusive theme and gamer pics.

Codemasters Games this week announced that the racer DiRT has sold more than 500,000 copies at worldwide retail. Additionally, the demo for PC and Xbox 360 has been downloaded more than 500,000 times.

Namco Bandai Games Inc. this week announced that Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation will be released to the U.S. this Oct. The title also be sold in the flight stick bundle the same day.

Nintendo Co.’s Wii sold more than 65,000 units this week in the latest Japan retail chart data. In addition, the console ranked three game titles in the top 10 software sales.

The Nintendo DS and Wii held reign over Japan charts, yielding 70 percent of the top ten software sales and representing the No. 1 and No. 2 hardware sellers for the week.

Nintendo this week briefly overtook Sony in market capitalization when its stock soared to a record high. Nintendo’s shares valued the company at $53 billion compared to Sony at $52.3 billion on Mon.

Nintendo this week announced that it will release WiiWare, a set of tools to promote independent game development for Wii. Titles will be sold at the Wii Shop channel for downloadable purchase by consumers.

Wii sales held this week in the latest sales data from Amazon.com’s Computer & Video Game division. Wii and related game products ranked in the top ten selling products in the division.

Wii sales plunged this week on Ebay despite ranking as the No. 1 Most Popular video game product on the auction site. Wii held the largest decrease in sales among all new consoles.
