Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii home video game system and the Nintendo DS handheld kept reign on overall hardware and software sales in Japan.
Software for the Wii and DS yielded 70 percent of the top ten software sales between June 18 and June 24. Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS ranked as the No. 1 selling title for the week, moving 302,887 units. Additionally, the DS was the top-selling hardware for the week, moving 163,888 units in the sales period.
Wii ranked seven titles in the top 50 software sales and sold 65,582 units in the same period.
Impressive sales have led third-party publishers to devote more development resources to the Wii and DS. This week, Midway Games Inc. announced that it will publish five exclusive titles for the Wii and DS in 2007.
The Nintendo DS has sold more than 35 million units since its launch in 2004. Wii has sold more than 5.5 million units in the U.S.
This week, the company said that it will offer tools for independent developers to create new downloadable game content for Wii.
