Midway to release five new exclusive Wii, DS titles

Midway Games Inc. on Thurs. announced five new game titles in development for Nintendo Co.’s Wii home video game system and the Nintendo DS handheld.

New titles for WIi include the action racing title Cruis’n and the skill game collection Game Party.

Titles in development for the DS include Ultimate Mortal Kombat, The Bee Game, and a title based on Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.

All titles are scheduled to be released in 2007.

“The Wii and Nintendo DS require games that are innovative and take full advantage of a unique control scheme to offer a truly different type of gameplay experience,” said Matt Booty, executive vice president - worldwide studios, Midway.

“We are very excited to be bringing classic Midway franchises such as Mortal Kombat and Cruis’n along with powerful licensed content like Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends to the massive installed base of Nintendo system owners.”

Video game publishers have begun devoting more development resources to Nintendo platforms, which require modest budgets compared to titles for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.

Wii is the No. 1-selling home console in the U.S., selling 338,000 units in the month of May in the latest sales data from NPD Group Inc. Additionally, the Nintendo DS is the top-selling handheld on the market, at more than 35 million units sold worldwide to date.

“Nintendo is very excited to be working with Midway to have these great brands and new products come exclusively to Wii and Nintendo DS,” said George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America Inc.

“These new games paired with the unique controls of Wii and Nintendo DS will continue to expand videogames to new audiences.”

Midway previously released Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for Wii and Touchmaster for Nintendo DS.
