Nintendo Co.’s Wii retook the No. 2 sales position in Japan after a surge in Sony Corp.’s PSP sales relegated the machine to third place. Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 67,070 units between Mar. 12 and Mar. 18. Sales were up from the week prior’s count of 57,972 units.
In addition, Wii ranked seven game titles in the top 50 game sales for the week. Top sellers included Wii Sports and Wii Play.
The PSP returned to its No. 3 position following the strong performance of Capcom’s Monster Hunter 2nd which helped boost hardware sales.
Wii is the best-selling console for two months straight in the U.S. Casual games have attracted a mass audience to the machine and away from rival consoles like Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.
Nintendo expects to ship 6 million Wii units by the end of Mar.
