Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 decreased in Japan but is closing in on Nintendo Co.’s Wii.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 32,115 units between Feb. 5 and Feb. 11, a 28 percent drop from the week prior.
However, sales were only 12,380 units below Wii in overall hardware demand.
Week-to-week tallies had Wii outperforming the PS3 by as much as 4-to-1. The increase in sales can be attributed to more available hardware and increased demand for new PS3 game titles.
The PS3 ranked two titles in the top 50 software sales, including Namco Bandai’s Gundam Musou and Sega’s Power Smash 3.
Sony this month announced that it will introduce Home, a social networking application for the PS3 this fall. In addition, the PS3 Cell processor will offer connectivity to Stanford University’s Folding@home program to help study diseases.
The PS3 is currently ranked No. 4 in overall video game hardware sales for Feb. in the U.S.
