Sony to build ‘Home’ social networking for PS3

Sony PlayStation 3 (60GB)

The Dow Jones on Tues. reported that Sony Corp. will introduce Playstation Home to add social networking to the Playstation 3 game console this fall.

Home will allow PS3 owners to build online identities and move through a three-dimensional online space to interact with other users.

Owners are said to be able to purchase new items for Home, including clothing and decorations. In addition, players can collect special items for their Home by acheiving goals in PS3 game titles.

The social networking strategy will help to differentiate the PS3 among rival consoles including Nintendo Co.’s Wii and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.

Wii has outperformed the PS3 in the U.S. and Japan by attracting a mass audience to motion-sensitive gaming. The Xbox 360 has held strong among core gamers by offering high-definition games and digital downloads of TV shows and movies.

Sony’s PS3 online functionality has been limited compared to Microsoft’s robust Xbox Live component. Playstation Home is expected to help the electronics giant better compete in software to compliment the high-horsepowered PS3.

Sony maintains a forecast of 6 million PS3 units shipped by fiscal Mar. 2007.
