Electronic Arts Inc. CEO Larry Probst told investors this week that he expects Sony Corp.’s video game hardware market share to decrease in the next hardware war.
Reuters on Mon reported that Probst expects Sony to win against rivals including Nintendo Co.’s Wii and Microsoft Corp.’s PS3, but with a less commanding lead.
Sony has incurred production and launch setbacks with the latest Playstation, including limited quantities to the U.S. and Japan, delayed launch to Europe, and a new hardware spec that will limit backwards compatibility.
Meanwhile Nintendo’s motion-sensitive Wii has emerged as a mass market gaming alternative with less barrier to entry than other products. Wii sales have outpaced the PS3 in Japan and in Jan. U.S. figures.
In addition, the Xbox 360 has shipped 10.4 million units after a one-year lead over the competition. Microsoft’s strong third-party library, Xbox Live Arcade offerings, and new digital distribution of TV and movies have helped spur sales among core game fans.
Sony maintains a shipment forecast of 6 million units sold by fiscal Mar. 2007.
