Nintendo Co.’s Wii is ahead of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in the latest retail sales data from Amazon.com’s Japan division.
Wii currently ranks at No. 5 in the Video Games division at Amazon.co.jp, while the 60GB PS3 ranks at No. 38.
Top-selling Wii software includes Wii Sports and Fire Emblem. Top software for the PS3 includes Gundam Musou and Power Smash 3.
The rankings are in line with overall week-to-week sales data that places the brisk-selling Wii over the PS3 at Japan retail. In the most recent retail sales data from Media Create Co., Wii outsold the PS3 by 3-to-1.
In addition, Wii outsold the PS3 in U.S. Jan. sales in the latest retail data from NPD Group.
Wii attracted mass market consumers during the holidays with a low price, motion-sensitive controller, and Wii Sports. The combination was enough to take the launch crown away from Sony’s PS3, which incurred production problems and held limited inventory at retail.
Sony this week said that it expects to alleviate inventory shortages in the U.S. by Apr. or May.
