Sony Corp. this week unveiled a second-generation Blu-ray disc player for videophiles that will be on par with the price of the Playstation 3.
The new BDP-S300 model will be available this summer for about $600, the same cost as the high-end 60GB PS3 SKU.
The stand-alone player can output 1920 x 1080p high-definition video and supports various formats, including MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1.
The lower-priced Blu-ray player will help to expand its market presence in the high-definition home entertainment market. The previous Sony BDP-S1 player debuted in Dec. at $1,000.
The 20GB PS3 SKU remains the lowest-priced Blu-ray disc player on the market at $499.
The Blu-ray format is at war against Toshiba’s HD DVD high-definition format. Blu-ray is backed by Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp, while HD DVD is backed by Microsoft and Intel.
Blu-ray disc sales are leading over HD DVD sales due in part to the release of the PS3 in Nov. Recent retail data estimates Blu-ray discs outselling HD DVD discs by 2-to-1.
Microsoft began offering an external HD DVD player for the Xbox 360 console in Nov. It retails for $199.
