Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 dropped 50 percent in Japan in an overall downturn in video game hardware sales for the week.
Media Create Co. on Jan. 21 reported that the Xbox successor sold 9,035 units between Jan. 8 and Jan. 14. By comparison, the machine sold 18,235 units the week prior.
Sales for all video game hardware fell for the week, affecting Nintendo Co.’s Wii and Nintendo DS handheld, and Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 console.
In addition to slower sales, games for the Xbox 360 were unable to rank in the top 50 software sales for the week.
In recent weeks, the Xbox 360 has seen healthier sales in Japan due to solid game offerings like the RPG Blue Dragon and the action game Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. The console continues to perform well in the U.S. and Europe, and surpassed company forecast estimates for year-end shipments.
Microsoft forecasts shipments of 13-15 million Xbox 360 units by fiscal Mar. 2007.
