Sony Corp. has quietly released the Blu-ray remote controller for its Playstation 3 to retail to allow owners better access to the console’s movie playback capabilities.
The Wal-Mart Superstore in Las Vegas, NV carried several of the new remotes prior to the end of the new year.
The remote resembles the layout of the Playstation 2 DVD remote and contains a moderate amount of buttons, unlike more recent universal remotes.
Sony chose not to include a remote controller device with the PS3 and instead included a Blu-ray disc version of Talladega Nights: The Story of Ricky Bobby in the first 1 million PS3s sold in the U.S.
Microsoft Corp. includes a remote controller in its premium version of the Xbox 360 sold at retail.
Sony is betting that the success of prior Playstation models will allow the high-definition Blu-ray format to flourish against rival Toshiba’s HD DVD format.
Sony is 2006 forecasted 2 million PS3s sold by the end of the year.
