January 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

Best Buy storeson New Year’s Eve sold additional quantities of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 as the calender year came to an end.

The PS3 dropped to U.S. retail on Nov. 17.

In its Sunday circular for Dec. 31st, the electronics retailer disclaimed that tickets to purchase the $599 60GB SKU would be distributed prior to store opening and that it would carry a minimum of 25 units per store.

In addition, Best Buy is offering a free $10 gift card when customers purchase any two PS3 game titles.

The PS3 is slowly trickling back to retail after a sell-out launch that sparked chaos in U.S. cities. The latest Playstation is estimated to have sold 200,000 units in Nov., lower than expected.

Sony is betting that the success of the previous Playstation consoles will allow its Blu-ray disc format to flourish in homes worldwide. The PS3 employs a high-definition disc drive that will read new Sony format movies.

Sony in 2006 forecasted to ship 2 million PS3 units by year-end.
