Nintendo Co.’s Wii outsold Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in Japan retail in hot demand for casual the new innovative game system.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that Wii sold 279,277 units from Dec. 18 to Dec. 24. By comparison, the PS3 sold 76,882 units in the same period.
Meanwhile, Wii charted two game titles in the top ten software sales, including the five-game collection Wii Sports.
From Software’s Armored Core 4 was the only PS3 game title to rank in the top 50 software sales.
Wii has outsold the PS3 for several weeks due to higher availability and mass market attraction for casual games. In addition, Wii retails for nearly half the cost of the least expensive PS3 model.
Nintendo expects to ship 4 million Wii units worldwide by year-end.
