PS3 games drop to $39.99 at retail

Sony PlayStation 3 (60GB)

Select games for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 dropped to $39.99 as the system nears its first holiday season at retail.

U.S. retailer Target is advertising game titles for PS3, including EA’s Need for Speed Carbon, Activision’s Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Tony Hawk’s Project 8 for under $40.

PS3 titles typically carry a retail price of $59.99.

The $20 discount for the select titles arrive only several weeks after the PS3 dropped to retailers on Nov. 17. Sony reportedly sold 200,000 units in Nov. in the U.S. which may have lead to lower-than-expected game sales.

While demand for the system caused retail chaos in the U.S., consumer interest has gained for rival Nintendo Co.’s Wii. Wii retails for the half the cost of the PS3 and game titles can purchased starting at $29.99.

The PS3 remains sold out in most retail stores. However, Sony maintains a shipment forecast of 2 million PS3 units to retail by year-end.
