Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo DS Lite handheld outperformed next-generation console offerings in Japan in continued demand for the lighter, brighter device.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the DS Lite sold 485,584 units from Dec. 18 to Dec. 24. By comparison, Wii sold 279,000 units, the PS3 moved 76,800 units, and the Xbox 360 sold 17,200 units.
In addition, DS titles dominated the top 10 software rankings in the same period. Game titles like Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl nabbed No. 1 and No. 3 respectively. In total, DS titles accounted for six of Japan’s top 10 game titles for the week.
The DS offers simpler graphics than Sony Corp.’s PSP handheld, but has attracted a broader audience with new game types and a touch input interface.
Nintendo has sold more than 21 million DS handhelds worldwide. The latest DS Lite version is lighter and brighter than the previous model.
