Nintendo Co. on Wed. said that it is on track to sell 4 million units of the Wii video game console by year-end.

Wii dropped to U.S. retail on Nov. 19 and sold 600,000 units in its first eight days in stores.

“All systems are go for reaching the 4-million target we have in our financials by December 31,” Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said at the Reuters Media Summit in New York.

“We will sell everything we make so now it’s simply a manufacturing thing.”

Nintendo expects Wii to attract core and casual gamers through a unique motion-sensing controller that will allow for new game experiences. Launch titles include The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and the pack-in title Wii Sports.

Wii has elicited mainstream buzz from publications, including Forbes, Slate, New York Times, and Popular Science for its innovative take on video games.

Meanwhile, Sony Corp. is selling the Playstation 3 at retail in a bid to win next-generation market share. The console features an IBM-developed Cell processor and Blu-ray disc drive for high-definition games and movies. Sony expects to ship 2 million units by year-end.
