Namco’s Ridge Racer 7 is the latest in the quintessential Playstation launch franchise. The PS3 version ups the ante with solid drift mechanics, high-definition visuals, and online racing.
The latest Ridge Racer offers the Ridge State Grand Prix Career Mode, UFRA Special Event for downloadable race events, and Machine Connector to customize vehicles.
Machine Connector is the most significant upgrade to the series and allows owners to customize the car engine, tires, nitrous, exterior parts and paint. Customization is crucial to future race wins.
New to Ridge Racer 7 is refined drift mechanics. The car drifts require acute handling that the last installment lacked on Xbox 360. Standard drift cars can now overturn without proper handling. AI cars in the latest version keep their pace and require more attention than the last installment.
The visuals are on par with the Xbox 360’s Ridge Racer 6. The PS3 is capable of cranking out high-definition visuals that render sharper locations and vehicles. Certain background definition and the two-player split screen is handled better on Microsoft’s machine.
Ridge Racer 7 is a solid launch offering for the PS3 in initial play tests. A full review will be published shortly.
