Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for Wii is sword fighting fun that employs new motion sensing control for a unique adventure.
The game starts in a village that requires Link to complete tasks for villagers to learn the basic controls. The Nunchuk controls Link’s movement, the c button controls the camera, and the Z trigger targets objects. The Wii Remote handles motion-sensing sword combat, multi-purpose tasks with the A button, sub weapons with the B trigger and item selection with the d-pad.
Link’s horse Epona is featured at the start of the game and players are required to round up goats via horseback. Epona’s movement is very good with the analog stick and users execute a dash with the A button.
Before Link enters combat, he has to fish. Players can set the fishing rod to the B trigger and drop the Wii Remote down to simulate casting a line into the water. With a few up and down shakes of the Wii Remote, the words ‘FISH ON’ will appear and requires players to keep the remote held high to nab a fish. Fishing has a learning curve and will take careful practice before players snag their first catch.
From the village, Link will enter his first dungeon. Horizontal and vertical swings of the Wii Remote will activate each sword swing. The A button will perform a jump attack, up on the analog and a thrust on the remote will perform a stab, and a twirl of the Nunchuk will perform a 360 attack. Only slight movement of the Wii Remote is required to attack and the response is very fluid for an experience unlike any previous title.
The 30 frames per second graphics engine is dated due to the fact that it was originally programmed for the GameCube. However, the developer’s generous use of textures and coloring help Link’s new world come to life.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be a huge adventure for Wii owners. The village and initial dungeon took about two hours to complete, and Link hasn’t even worn his green tights or left for Hyrule yet.
