Nintendo confident Wii won't be a gimmick

Nintendo is confident that its Wii video game system, which employs an unconventional motion-sensing remote controller, will not be a gimmick.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told AOL Games this week that unlike previous peripherals like the Power Glove and Donkey Konga bongo controller, every Wii game makes use of the Wii Remote.

“Imagine if we’d made three games that made use of the DS touch screen. It wouldn’t be enough,” Fils-Aime said. “And so that’s why every game makes innovative use of the Wii remote in some way, shape or form, whether it’s based on the sensor bar, the direct pointing capabilities or the use of the nunchuk. Every single game makes use of the Wii remote. That’s why I’m confident it won’t be a gimmick.”

Nintendo will drop Wii to U.S. retail on Nov. 19 for $249. Initial reaction from game publishers has been positive with backing from heavyweights like EA, Activision, THQ, and Ubisoft at launch.

The Wii Remote controller, included with each unit sold, will allow players to control video games by moving the remote like a physical object, such as a tennis racket or a baseball bat.

Wii’s unconventional approach to gaming has not been without criticism. In Oct. 2005, Epic VP Mark Rein told audience members in an IGN Live Panel event that the Wii would see “more gimmick, crappy, cheap, I-wish-I-hadn’t-bought-it gimmick games based around that controller than you could ever possibly imagine.”

Nintendo expects to sell 6 million Wii machines by Mar. 2007.
