Capcom’s Mega Man ZX for the Nintendo DS is solid action game that offers sharp shooting action in mission-based gameplay. The game’s perfect controls and new Biometal system offer quality side-scrolling action to the handheld.
In Mega Man ZX, courier employees Vent and Aile must transport new Model X and Model Z Biometals. Mavericks who want the metal ambush the duo in an attempt to steal the material. Before the thieves take the Biometal it suddenly forges to the main character (either Vent or Aile) to transform him or her into a Mega Man-like action hero.
Mega Man ZX features classic Mega Man action with a few new twists. The main character can wear various Biometal suits to enable new powers or take the suit off to interact with human characters for certain missions. In addition, the game world is one large interconnected series of levels that the player can explore. Players must stand in one of several hubs located in the world to select missions, abandon mission, and save data.
Controls in the game are conservative and don’t vary from previous entries. Vent or Aile can only fire in horizontal directions to keep the ‘jump and fire’ motif from previous entries. In addition, players can grip walls, follow up a charge blast with another power blast, and hop out of the Biometal suit to crawl into small spaces.
Missions in the game include standard shoot-and-destroy objectives and an investigative mission that will require players to abandon the Biometal suit so that city dwellers don’t question your motives.
Most action takes place on the top DS screen, while additional data like enemy weak points and hidden item locations sit at the bottom.
The graphics engine is solid at 60 frames per second. Mega Man ZX features beautiful sprite characters that employ great animation. The music and sound effects are like previous entries in the series to keep the action up tempo.
Mega Man ZX is a great action offering for the Nintendo DS. The solid controls, expanding environment, and mid-range difficulty make it en easy recommendation for the dual-screen handheld.
