Apple on Tuesday announced that it will offer iPod owners video game downloads through the iTunes music store.

The company released nine game offerings, including Tetris, Pac-Man, Texas Hold ‘Em, and Bejeweled. Each title retails for $4.99.

The games are compatible only with fifth generation iPods and cannot be played in iTunes. iPod owners can control the casual games with the music player’s four-direction click wheel.

The video games mark an initial entry in the handheld game sector for the friendly computer company. Nintendo and Sony currently hold the portable games market with the Nintendo DS and the PSP, respectively.

In addition, Apple debuted new movies available for download on iTunes and a revised version of the iPod nano and iPod shuffle.
