Blu-ray player sales up 53 percent Black Friday

NPD Group Inc. this week said Blu-ray player sales increased 53 percent during Black Friday, the annual shopping day after Thanksgiving.

The 53 increase is compared to sales data from Black Friday the year prior.

This year, retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. sold a Magnavox Blu-ray player at $78 in a Black Friday Doorbuster sale. In addition to Wal-Mart, Best Buy Co. Inc. sold many Blu-ray titles at $10 and under.

Concurrently, Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3, which includes a Blu-ray disc drive in each unit sold, held record sales during Thanksgiving week.

Retailer have continued to offer Blu-ray discounts amid a recessed economy.

Amazon.com this week discounted Blu-ray titles by up to 60 percent in a new high-definition promotion.

Discounted titles include The Dark Knight at $15.99, Band of Brothers at $49.99, True Blood: The Complete First Season at $31.99, and Wedding Crashers at $9.99.

A total of 155 Blu-ray titles are discounted under the promotion.

The retailer is concurrently holding a new under $20 Blu-ray disc high-definition promotion.

Titles under $20 include Star Trek at $19.99, Up at $19.99, Terminator: Salvation at $15.99, The Hangover at $15.99 and Planet Earth The Complete BBC Series at $39.99.

Finally, it is holding a $9.99 Blu-ray sale in a new high-definition promotion.
