Nintendo Co.'s Nintendo DSi outsold Sony Corp.'s PSP nearly 4-to-1 in the latest Japan retail charts this week.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the DSi sold 96,986 units between July 13 and July 19 to rank No. 1 in overall sales.

By comparison, the PSP sold 24,053 units to rank second in the same period.

Strong sales of the DSi were due to the release of Square Enix Co.'s Dragon Quest IX, which moved 612,671 copies to rank as the top software title for the week.

Nintendo in Apr. began sale of the Nintendo DSi at U.S. retail.

Sony this month announced the PSP Go, a new 16GB handheld to hold all digital content.

The product will be sold for $249 on Oct. 1.
