Sales for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 increased at Amazon Japan on Wed. amid reports of a sales surge in the territory following a hardware price cut.
The Xbox 360 60GB SKU held a 317 percent increase in sales at Amazon Japan to rank as the No. 63 best-selling product in the Video Games division. Microsoft on Sept. 1 price cut all Xbox 360 hardware in Japan to as low as 19,800 yen ($189) in an aggressive discount to build market share in the region. Microsoft on Sept. 5 discounted all Xbox 360 hardware in the U.S. between $50 to $80 to spur sales. The Arcade SKU now sells for $199, the Pro at $299 and the Elite at $399. The company in Sept. said Xbox 360 sales doubled on the weekend immediately following the price cut. The Xbox 360 rebounded in Aug. U.S. sales on strong demand for EA Inc.'s Madden NFL 09 after a multi-month session of sales that notched below Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3. The Xbox 360 sold 195,200 units in Aug. to rank at No. 4 in overall hardware sales, according to NPD Group Inc. Amazon.com this month began offering a free $60 gift card with the purchase of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 Elite SKU. In the new promotion, buyers who purchase the $399 Xbox 360 Elite product will receive a $60 Amazon.com gift card by e-mail.
