To drive Labor Day sales, Best Buy Co. Inc. stores this week discounted a Blu-ray player to $249.99 after an instant $30 price cut. Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray disc format became the default high-definition disc format following Toshiba Corp.'s exit from the HD DVD business in Feb.
Toshiba this month began selling the new XD-E500 upconvert DVD player in an effort to capitalize on consumers unwilling to invest in Sony's Blu-ray format.
The player is said to provide standard DVD images closer to high-definition quality, allowing consumers to utilize their existing DVD library.
Additionally, Sony this month released the new 80GB PS3 at an aggressive $399.99, the price of its previous 40GB model.
The product includes a built-in Blu-ray disc drive for high-def movies and a new Dualshock 3 controller with rumble functionality.
