NPD: Wii, DS beat PS3, Xbox 360 in July U.S. sales

NPD Group Inc. this week reported that Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Nintendo DS products handily outsold rival video game hardware in the latest July U.S. sales tally.
According to NPD Group Inc., the Nintendo DS sold 608,000 and the Wii sold 555,000 to rank as the No. 1 and No. 2 best-selling video game hardware for the month, respectively. The Wii claimed a 49 percent share in overall console hardware sales, while the Nintendo DS dominated the handheld market at a 73 percent share. Additionally, five titles for Nintendo systems ranked in the top 10 game sales in July, including Wii Fit at No. 2, Guitar Hero: On Tour at No. 3, Wii Play at No. 4, Mario Kart Wii at No. 7 and Rock Band for Wii at No. 8. Meanwhile, Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 posted sales of 224,900 units in July to represent a 99 percent hardware sales growth from the year prior to date. Sony cited the popularity of the PS3 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, which has held a sold out status at retailers including Walmart.com and Bestbuy.com. The PSP ranked at No. 4 to sell 221,700 units for the month. Sony in Aug. began selling a new Madden NFL 09 PSP Entertainment Pack. The Xbox 360 posted sales of 204,800 units in July to rank as the No. 5 video game hardware offering for the month. Video game sales totaled $1.9 billion in July to represent a 28 percent growth from the year prior.
