Sony Corp. this month said that Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV held a higher attach rate on the Playstation 3 than on Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.
More than 32 percent of PS3 owners have purchased a copy of GTA IV, a six percent higher rate than Xbox 360 owners, Sony said in a e-mail release last week. A total of 442,910 copies of GTA IV were sold for the PS3 in May. More than 1 million copies of GTA IV for the PS3 were sold last month. GTA IV was unable to significantly increase video game hardware sales according to the latest data from NPD Group Inc. While the title held the No. 1 software sales position in the month of May, the title did little to heat up hardware movement for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3. The PS3 sold 208,709 units compared to the Xbox 360 at 186,600 units in May. Take-Two Interactive in May said that GTA IV generated $500 million in launch sales to date. The title sold 2.9 million copies in the U.S. across both platforms in the first five days of release. The latest entry revolves around Niko Bellic, a Russian immigrant who travels to Liberty City.
