Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 fell after a one-week rebound in the latest Japan retail data. The PS3 ranked as the No. 4 in overall hardware charts.
Best Buy Co. Inc. this week began cross-marketing the PS3 to former HD DVD owners in the latest pitch to spur high-definition adoption. Best Buy is offering rebates and incentives to previous HD DVD buyers. Sony this week said it will add Blu-ray Profile 2.0 to PS3 owners in Mar. The update will add new interactive features and competitive local and online play to future compatible Blu-ray releases. The 80GB PS3 sold out this week at Amazon.com on high demand. The hardware held an increase in sales during the week and runs in and out of stock at the retailer. The 40GB PS3 this week was knocked out the top 10 best-sellers at Amazon due to high demand for Nintendo Co.'s Wii products. The hardware previously held positions in the No. 9 and No. 10 ranks. Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 this week held sales below 2,000 units in the latest Japan retail figures. The hardware ranked last in overall console and handheld sales in the region.
