Smash Bros. sold out despite in-store availability status

Nintendo Co.'s brand new game title Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii may be sold out a Best Buy store near you despite an in-store availability check online.
Several Best Buy locations in Southern California were sold out of the new release immediately after its Mar. 9 debut. Employees in two locations scattered to look for more copies behind registers and in back stock rooms only to come out empty-handed. Both locations held several copies for customers who pre-ordered the title, which may have lead BestBuy.com's inventory system to show that the store had the product in stock. Upon telling a Best Buy employee that the item held an in-stock status at the store location and was available for in-store pick-up, she suggested that we order the item online and pick up the item at the store. (Nope, that option didn't make sense to us either.) Brawl is the latest entry in the fighting franchise. The previous installment sold 7.09 million units on the Nintendo GameCube to become the console's best-selling title to date. Nintendo on Mon. said that a small percentage of Wii consoles may be unable to read Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The company is offering to repair Wii consoles that have trouble reading the title at no cost. It recommends that customers not attempt to clean the lens themselves, a course of action which may damage the system. Wii ranked as the No. 1-selling game hardware in the month of Jan., moving 274,000 units according to data from NPD Group Inc.
