Amazon price cuts HD DVD titles to $8.95

Amazon.com on Sat. price cut HD DVD format titles to as low as $8.95 in the latest move to clear remaining inventory of the high-definition product.

HD DVD titles The Matador and School for Scoundrels now retail for $8.95.

Additionally, a wave of titles are now priced at $9.95, including The Pianist, The Fast and The Furious, Backdraft, Shaun of the Dead, The Big Lebowski, Pride and Prejudice, The Chronicles of Riddick, and The Bourne Identity.

Toshiba last month said it will exit the HD DVD business by Mar. following announcements from Best Buy Co. Inc., Netflix Inc., and Wal-Mart stores that they would back Blu-ray over HD DVD.

Retailers have begun to offer new purchase incentives to move HD DVD product.

Best Buy Co. Inc. this week began offering 30 percent off all HD DVD inventory to in-store customers.

This week, Amazon.com fired a new 57% off HD DVD sale to promote HD DVD sales.

Discounted titles include The Complete Matrix Trilogy at $41.99, The Ocean's Trilogy at $36.49, Harry Potter Years 1- 5 Limited Edition Gift Set at $71.49, and Batman Begins at $15.99.
