Amazon price cuts Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to $49.99

Amazon.com on Mon. price cut Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 HD DVD Player in a bid to sell off remaining inventory of the device.
The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player was introduced in Nov. 2006 as an option to view high-definition format titles. Additionally, K-Mart price cut the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to $49.99 on Sun. to online customers. Amazon quickly sold out of the device on Mon. morning. It is available at a discounted price through a third-party seller. Microsoft Corp. on Sat. said that will end the production of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player. Toshiba Corp. last week said that it will exit the HD DVD business following a two-year bout against Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray disc format. Last week, Netflix Inc, Best Buy Co. Inc, and Wal-Mart stores all pledged to back Blu-ray disc over HD DVD in the U.S. A decisive blow to the HD DVD camp came in Jan. when Warner Bros. announced that it would produce high-definition titles exclusively on Blu-ray disc. Analysts last week said that they do not expect Microsoft to provide a Blu-ray-based solution for the Xbox 360. Instead, they predict a focus on digital content distribution via the Xbox Live online network. U.S. retailers have begun offering HD DVD products at steep discounts to move inventory. Amazon.com this week is offering a 57 percent off HD DVD sale to customers. Best Buy Co. Inc. last week offered HD DVD titles starting at $14.99 to in-store an online customers. Meanwhile, Best Buy this week is touting Blu-ray and the Playstation 3 in the Sunday circular front page. The retailer is offering an HDTV, PS3, game, and Blu-ray disc package for under $2,000. Additioanlly, Amazon is offering up to 50 percent off select Blu-ray disc titles.
