Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 fell for the third straight week in the latest Japan retail sales figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 17,637 units between Feb. 11 and Feb. 17. By comparison the hardware sold 23,985 the week prior and 41,796 units two weeks ago.

The PS3 ranked one title in the top ten software charts, Capcom Co.'s Devil May Cry 4 at No. 9 with 17,774 units sold for the week.

Sony scored a coup this week when Toshiba Corp. announced that it will exit the HD DVD business to leave Blu-ray disc as the default high-definition format.

Each PS3 sold includes a Blu-ray disc drive to view new high-definition titles.

In the U.S., Sony held increased PS3 sales during the month of Jan., moving 269,000 units to outsell Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 according to NPD Group Inc.

Sony this month recorded a 25.2 percent increase in profit in the Oct. to Dec. sales period. Additionally, it cut the PS3 fiscal shipment forecast to 9.5 million units from 11 million.
