Toshiba to finalize HD DVD exit Tues., says report

The Nikkei Net News on Mon. said that Toshiba Corp. will announce an exit from the HD DVD market on Tues.
According to the report, Toshiba will stop developing and manufacturing HD DVD players and recorders immediately and cease production of HD DVD products by Mar. The claim coincides with an earlier report from NHK Japan Broadcasting Corp. that it will end HD DVD production and close DVD factories in the Aomori prefecture in Northern Japan. Toshiba's exit follows a two-year war against Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray disc format to claim lucrative manufacturer royalties for the high-definition DVD market. An early blow to the HD DVD camp came in Jan. when Warner Bros. announced that it would produce high-definition titles exclusively on Blu-ray disc. This month, Netflix Inc, Best Buy Co. Inc, and Wal-Mart stores all pledged to back Blu-ray disc over HD DVD. Major retailers this week are offering steep discounts on HD DVD products and promoting Blu-ray disc sales. Amazon.com this week began offering a 'Buy 2 Get 1 Free' promotion on a wide range of HD DVD titles. Additionally, it is promoting a 3-for-2 sale on Blu-ray disc titles. Circuit City this week is offering a full page of Blu-ray disc titles discounted to $24.99 in the latest Sun. circular. Finally, Target Corp. this week is offering a free $40 gift card with the purchase of the 40GB Playstation 3, which includes a Blu-ray disc player in each unit sold.
