Paramount Home Enterainment on Thur. released a slate of upcoming high-definition titles on Toshiba Corp.'s HD DVD format in the midst of a format battle between it and Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray disc.

Titles due from Paramount include Zodiac (Jan. 8), Beowulf (Feb. 26), Things We Lost In The Fire (Mar. 4), Bee Movie (Mar. 11), and The Jack Ryan Collection.

The schedule release follows an announcement from Warner Bros. last week that it will defect from the HD DVD format and produce new high-definition titles exclusively on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray titles have outsold HD DVD by 2-to-1 in the U.S.

In Aug. 2007, Paramount Pictures announced exclusive support for HD DVD. Initial titles released include Transformers, Shrek the Third, and Blades of Glory.

Toshiba this week price cut all stand-alone HD DVD models in order to spur sales of the hardware. The entry level model can be purchased for as low as $131.98.

Amazon this week slashed prices on more than 80 HD DVD titles to as low as $14.99.

In addition, it price cut more than 200 Blu-ray disc titles to as low as $14.99 to spur high-definition disc sales.

Sony this month said the Playstation 3, which includes a Blu-ray disc drive, has outsold Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 HD DVD Player by nearly 10-to-1 in the U.S.

Nearly three million PS3 units have been sold in the U.S. to date.

The Blu-ray Disc Association in Dec. said that 2.7 million players have been sold through to U.S. consumers. The HD DVD Promotions Group in Nov. said that 750,000 HD DVD players have been sold through to consumers.
