Nintendo of America President and CEO told reporters in a conference call Fri. that the company is pleased with sales of the latest Mario title, Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii home video game system.

"We are tremendously satisfied with the performance of that title," Fils-Aime replied when asked about lower-than-expected sales at retail.

Super Mario Galaxy sold 1,123,000 units during the month of Nov. according to NPD Group Inc. The title had been projected to sell 1,304,000 units according to the simExchange.

Nintendo in late Nov. said that the latest Mario adventure sold 500,000 units its first week alone at U.S. retail. The newest entry in the franchise features Mario in gravity-defying gameplay and motion-sensitive controls.

The Wii hardware shortage at U.S. stores may have limited potential sales for Super Mario Galaxy and other Wii titles. Many consumers have been unable to secure a unit for the holiday season due to unprecedented demand for the machine, which includes a wand-like remote controller for lower barrier-to-entry titles.

Analysts and retails estimate that Nintendo may lose $1 billion in sales due to Wii supply problems.

Nintendo last week said it will issue rainchecks for Wii at GameStop locations in the U.S. to allow consumers to secure a unit by Jan. 2008. This past Sun., retailers, including Best Buy, Target, and Toys R Us restocked Wii for circular sales.
