Sony Corp. on Fri. said that Playstation 3 owners have downloaded more than 60 million pieces of online content in the first year of business.
In addition, more than 200 game titles have been released in the one-year anniversary of the latest Playstation.
The PS3 was released in the U.S. on year prior on Nov. 15 in a notoriously limited launch that caused mayhem at retail stores.
Sony this week said that a price cut for the Playstation 3 console has more than doubled week-to-week sales of the hardware at U.S. retail.
Sony price cut the 80GB SKU to $499 in Oct. and released a $399 40GB model this month.
To date, PS3 sales have been lower-than-expected due to average game library and high retail cost. The hardware has shipped more than five million units worldwide compared to Nintendo’s Wii at 13.2 million units and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 at 13.4 million units.
Sony released the 40GB PS3 this month to spur sales at U.S. retail. The $399 option is the lowest-priced SKU to date and will likely attract buyers to the hardware and Blu-ray disc technology this holiday.
Sony in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.
