PS3 outsells Wii at Japan retail

Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 outsold Nintendo Co.’s Wii in the latest round of retail musical chairs in Japan.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 55,924 units between Nov. 5 and Nov. 11, a spike from a week prior total of 17,434 units sold.

By comparison, Wii sold 34,546 units in the same period.

Sony released the 40GB PS3 on Nov. 11 helped to spur sales at in the region. In addition, two software titles for the hardware ranked in the top 10 game sales for the week.

The PS3 has typically held sales behind Wii in week-to-week tallies. In June, Wii held a 6-to-1 lead in sales, however the lead slimmed to 2-to-1 in Oct.

Last week, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 on the release of Namco Bandai’s Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation.

The sales spike is a positive note for Sony, which has seen slow sales of the latest Playstation in worldwide markets.

Sony in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.
