Sony Corp.'s 80GB Playstation 3 is outselling the new 40GB SKU in the latest retail data at Amazon.com.
On Mon., the 80GB PS3 SKU ranked at No. 24 in sales compared to the 40GB product at No. 34 in the Video Games division. The $399 40GB PS3 debuted on Nov. 2 and includes built-in a Blu-ray disc drive, Wi-Fi, wireless controller, and a copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc. The 80GB PS3 model introduced in Aug. includes a larger 80GB hard drive, limited backwards compatibility, and a copy of the title Motorstorm. It was price cut by $100 to $499 in Oct. Sony held a similar position last winter when the PS3 was launched to U.S. retail. In Apr., it citied overwhelming demand for the 60GB SKU over the 20GB version and discontinued the latter. In July, Sony discounted and discontinued the 60GB SKU in order to push retail product out of inventory and spur sales. Last week, Circuit City listed the 80GB PS3 as a top-seller at its online division. The PS3 has sold five million units worldwide to date.
